Where we work

Trades marketing in Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere and nearby counties

The Calgary region is Alberta's most competitive trades market, so the winning plan is narrow: tight targeting inside the city, deliberate work in Airdrie and Chestermere, and referrals for calls from beyond your range.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

The Calgary region is the busiest and costliest trades market in Alberta, so the plan that works is a focused one. Own the communities nearest your base, treat Airdrie and Chestermere as separate markets with their own budgets, and send calls from far beyond your range to a written referral partner rather than chasing them.

The local market and its buyers

Calgary is Alberta's largest city, with 1,306,784 people in the 2021 Census according to the list of Alberta cities, and the same source groups Airdrie, Calgary and Chestermere as the three cities of the Calgary Metropolitan Region. Around them sit Rocky View County and Foothills County, with acreages and small communities that many Calgary trades also serve.

Two features of the market matter for marketing. The first is growth at the edges: Airdrie grew 20.3% between 2016 and 2021, to 74,100 people, which means many newer homes and a steady stream of first-time buyers looking for trades. The second is the commercial base: Calgary has the second-largest number of corporate head offices among Canada's 800 largest corporations, which supports commercial service, fit-out and maintenance work for trades set up to win it.

Seasonality and climate

Alberta winters are long and cold, and southern Alberta, Calgary included, gets chinook winds that can turn a frozen week mild almost overnight. For trades, that means demand can change direction fast.

  • Deep cold: heating, frozen-pipe and electrical load calls climb
  • Sudden thaw: burst pipes, ice dams, roof leaks and basement water arrive together
  • Short outdoor season: roofing, concrete, fencing and landscaping crowd into a few busy months, so quote requests start in late winter

We keep prepared ad groups for each pattern so that budgets can move within a day of a weather change, with your sign-off.

Rules and regulators to know

Province-wide rules apply here as everywhere in Alberta. The safety codes system sets permits and inspections for building, electrical, gas, plumbing and other disciplines, delivered locally by accredited municipalities and agencies. For City of Calgary permit questions, start at calgary.ca. We link and summarise; for compliance questions, ask the authority directly.

As of October 2026, check whether a customer's municipality participates in the Clean Energy Improvement Program before mentioning it in Calgary-area marketing, since the program runs only in participating municipalities. Confirm current details with the program before you promote it.

How we'd approach marketing in the Calgary region

The plan below is typical for a trade based inside Calgary that also works the surrounding cities.

  1. Quadrant-level pages. A page for the part of the city you serve most, with real jobs from those communities, beats one generic "Calgary" page.
  2. Airdrie and Chestermere as their own markets. Separate pages, a separate ad budget and reviews from customers there.
  3. County work by job type. Acreage work in Rocky View or Foothills County often means longer drives, so we usually advertise only higher-value jobs there.
  4. High-value focus in paid search. Because Calgary clicks tend to be expensive, we often keep paid search for replacements, installs and commercial work, and let organic pages and the map listing carry small service calls.
  5. Referrals for the far south and north. Calls from Lethbridge, Red Deer or further usually go better to a written referral partner. The out-of-area referrals service explains how.

The local business mix

Most Calgary-region trades businesses we see fall into three groups: emergency-led trades (plumbing, heating, electrical) where the map listing and phone answering decide most jobs; project trades (roofing, renovation, landscaping) where photos and reviews win over weeks; and commercial-focused firms where relationships with property managers matter more than search. Each needs a different weighting of the same tools, which the services overview sets out. Our tracking by city shows which of the region's markets is really paying.

We're a marketing and consulting service, not a contractor, so we never compete with you for Calgary work. To talk about your part of the region, contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth trying to rank across all of Calgary?

Usually not at first. Calgary is large enough that people search by community and quadrant, and the map results favour nearby firms. Most businesses do better owning the part of the city closest to their base, then expanding.

Should a Calgary firm advertise in Airdrie?

If your crews already work there and the jobs are profitable after travel, yes, with its own budget line and its own page. Airdrie is a city in its own right, not a Calgary neighbourhood, and people there search that way.

How do chinooks affect trade marketing?

They can swing demand quickly. A sudden thaw after a deep freeze can bring burst-pipe, ice-dam and roof calls together, so we keep weather-ready ads that can go live within a day.
